Slow shopping, style epiphanies, and Lagos Fashion Week 2024 must-haves

A few years ago, whenever someone called me a fashionista, I’d quickly correct them. I didn’t fit that label—I was still experimenting with my style. However, last week in Cape Town, a stranger complimented my looks and told me they’d love to recreate them. That moment made me pause and reflect on how far I’ve come. Today, my style is more refined and more intentional. I embrace comfort, timeless cuts, and a hint of sensuality. It’s all about staying true to what makes me feel good. And looking good is good business.

Before heading to South Africa, I knew the weather in Johannesburg and Cape Town would be unpredictable this time of the year, so I thought about buying new clothes for the trip. Then it hit me—I already had everything I needed. Over time, I’ve carefully built a wardrobe full of pieces I love and truly reflect who I am. A friend once gave me the best advice: shop strategically, not impulsively. This slow-shopping mindset has completely changed how I approach fashion. I’m more focused on being more mindful of what I’m buying, why, and how much I spend.

My makeup routine has followed suit. It’s become simpler and more natural. With my bald head, I’ve embraced a fresh, skin-like look—no foundation, just an intense blush cream, a sweep of mascara, and bold lips. Thanks to Wana Udobang for that advice! It’s minimal yet striking, a balance that feels just right. Just like French girl makeup.

With Lagos Fashion Week 2024 around the corner, I want to encourage you to do the same: open up your wardrobe and reconnect with those hidden gems. It’s not just about elevating your style—it’s about embracing what you already have.

Here’s a sneak peek into what I’m loving and rocking from my curated collection this week:

Lagos Fashion Week 2024 essentials

Blazer magic:

Lagos Fashion Week 2024

ATAFO Blazer: ₦1,000,000

This blazer is my go-to for instantly transforming any “meh” outfit into a showstopper. A well-fitted  blazer brings sharpness, confidence, and flair. This blue number from ATAFO is a personal favourite—it’s perfect for keeping things casual with a white tee or dressing it up for a night out.

Vest but not least:

Lagos Fashion Week 2024

Hertunba vest: ₦56,500

The underrated hero of my wardrobe. This vest transitions effortlessly from a power meeting to a casual day out. While vests might currently seem trendy to some, they’ve always been timeless for me. I’ve relied on my custom Hertunba vest for five years. I’ll pair it with tailored trousers for a minimal look or a pleated skirt for that tennis-chic vibe.

The shirt that does the talking:

Henri Uduku Rose Shirt via Henri Uduku

Henri Uduku Rose Shirt: ₦55,500

This is no ordinary white button-down. The embroidered rose detail gives it a unique twist, making it stand out in all the right ways. Whether I’m layering it with a sweater or styling it with flared denim, this shirt strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sensuality.

P.S.: It’s sold out now, but I hear it might make a comeback for the holidays!

Tote-ally awesome:

David Blackmoore x Sunflower Department “Love Now” Tote: ₦25,000

This tote is a lifesaver when you’re on the go and need a stylish yet spacious bag. It’s the perfect blend of practicality and style—on one side, vibrant designs, and on the other, a more minimal look. This tote went everywhere with me during my South Africa trip.

Beauty essentials for that effortless glow

Lips and cheeks, on repeat:

N°1 De Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm via Chanel

N°1 De Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm: ₦77,773

This Chanel balm gives me a natural flush on my lips and cheeks. While I initially used it as a lip balm, I’m currently obsessed with using it as a blush. It is easy to apply and gives me that perfect pop of colour. I prefer using my knuckles to apply it and lightly tapping with my fingers to blend it in.

Glow on the go:

Chanel Baume Glow Stick via Chanel

Chanel Baume Glow Stick: ₦77,773

This glow stick is unbeatable for that “I woke up like this” glow. The shade Moonlight Kiss adds the right amount of shimmer to my cheekbones. It is subtle and radiant, and the stick effect makes it easy to use. I once saw a Nara Smith video where she used the finger technique to heat it before applying it. I currently layer it on the N°1 De Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm for a moonlight-kissed look.

As Lagos Fashion Week 2024 approaches, I have a challenge for you. Enter an adventurous relationship with your wardrobe and rediscover those pieces that reflect your unique style. You’ll find that some of the best pieces are already there, just waiting for you and the right style to make a statement.
