Fun with Frills! Why we love the whimsical trend

Frills are back and better, baby! Having first risen to popularity in the 40s to 60s, the charm of these delightful embellishments reached its zenith in the 80s. It was an era that witnessed some of our beloved celebrities rocking them, and the trend even carried its flair well into the 90s.

In the cyclic nature of fashion, we had another burst of the frills trend in the summer of 2017, where celebrities like Beyonce and Rihanna rocked them on many occasions, and the soft, romantic detail has had an occasional presence over the years. They’re back in full swing now, and our excitement knows no bounds!

Easily mistaken for ruffles or flounces, frills are actually strips of gathered or pleated fabric attached to a garment as a stylish form of trimming or embellishment. Historically, frills were a versatile, unisex design element that transcended gender boundaries. However, over time, they became more closely associated with femininity. Fortunately, today we have gender-inclusive frill-adorned pieces that allow everyone to enjoy the playful charm of frills.

What makes frills truly special? It’s all about that texture, movement, and touch of playfulness they bring to your everyday style! These delightful additions dance along the edges of sleeves, hems, necklines, and more, adding a gentle, flowing vibe to your outfits.

Frills represent a romantic or whimsical style used to achieve details from subtle accents to more dramatic and voluminous ones.

Styling frills the right way

Take that frilled short dress up a notch by pairing it with chic heeled sandals that not only elevate your style but also give your legs a stunning elongated look. Add a statement necklace and some eye-catching earrings to draw attention to your neckline and face. Complete this chic ensemble with a mini bag to keep things light and fashionable.

Looking to switch it up a bit? How about rocking a frilled top with some sleek, tailored pants? Elevate the ensemble with stylish platform heels, giving you that extra height and a dash of sophistication. Complete the look with delicate jewellery for that perfect finishing touch.

Another delightful option is to select a top adorned with delicate frills around the neckline and sleeves, and pair it with a frilled skirt that gracefully falls just below the knee. To accentuate your waist, incorporate a thin metallic belt into the ensemble. Opt for heeled sandals once again for a stylish lift, and don’t forget a clutch bag for practicality. Complete the look with small stud earrings and a dainty bracelet for a polished finish.
