Draped in a white sparkly dress on Thursday night, Tems received the Billboard Breakthrough Award on March 7, 2024.
As she received the award, Tems did not hesitate to credit her mother for the wise words she imparted while growing up.
“I want to dedicate this award to my mum, who is the first woman I’ve ever met. She taught me that whatever you’re going through shouldn’t give you a reason not to champion everyone around you.”
She further thanked her supporters and team for standing behind her and implored women to keep supporting women despite the challenges they may face.
“To all the women in this room and the world, no matter what you’re going through, know that you are not alone. Even when you’re angry, there’s someone else angry too. So, uplift the women around you. We don’t have anybody but ourselves.”
Following her breakthrough feature on “Essence” with WizKid, Tems has since gained global recognition for her distinctive vocal prowess. The award exemplifies Tems’ tenacity in the music industry. Receiving accolades from international and local music organisations has become the order of the day for the Grammy award-winning artist, and with more songs on the charts, we can only predict many more beautiful award speeches to come.
