The 2025 film “Sinners” directed by Ryan Coogler makes history with 16 nominations, the most a film has ever had at the Oscars.
Ryan Coogler’s genre‑blending film “Sinners” has taken the 98th Academy Awards nominations by storm. It earned a record‑breaking 16 nominations, more than any movie in Oscar history, topping giants like “Titanic”, “La La Land”, and “All About Eve”. Sinners was recognised in major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director for Coogler and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan. This showed the Academy’s appreciation for the film’s vision and craft.
Set in Mississippi in 1932, “Sinners” follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan, who return home to open a juke joint for their Black community. Their plans quickly collide with supernatural forces when a vampire threat emerges, forcing the community into a fight for survival that blends horror with deeper themes of race, history, and resilience. The film mixes Southern Gothic, blues music, and social commentary, making it a feature dissecting identity and legacy.
The 2026 Academy Awards slate of nominations highlights a diverse mix of incredible films. “Sinners”, record breaking nominations reflects strong performances, visionary ideas, and innovation.
