Kdramas are my first choice because there are typically no subsequent seasons. I’m not one of those people who can wait years for the next season of a show. However, I came across “Poker Face” in 2023 on a staycation after a friend recommended it. Needless to say, I watched all ten episodes in one day. I was hooked!

Poker Face” is a thrilling crime comedy-drama TV series that follows Charlie Cale, a witty casino worker with an extraordinary ability to detect lies. Created by Rian Johnson, the show stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, who goes on the run from her casino boss after the suspicious death of her best friend and coworker. With her trusty Plymouth Barracuda, Charlie travels across the US, getting entangled in mysterious deaths and solving homicides along the way.

After the first season, I was like a connoisseur craving her next fix. I can also admit to frequent check-ins for updates on release date, so you can imagine my excitement when season two was finally released on 8 May 2025. It was even better than I expected.

The new season opens with Oscar-nominated actress and singer Cynthia Erivo playing five different characters —quintuplets. What’s even more mind-blowing is how she effortlessly transitions between personalities, accents and mannerisms. A masterpiece!

Don’t just take my word for it, “Poker Face” has received widespread critical acclaim for its clever writing, engaging characters, and expertly crafted mysteries. It also has a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 1 and an impressive 100% for Season 2. If you’re eager to dive into the world of “Poker Face,” you can stream it on Peacock. Don’t miss out on the latest mysteries – tune in and join the excitement!

Binge-watch “Forever” — Tobi

Spoilers ahead! I binge-watched “Forever” on Netflix over the weekend and enjoyed every minute. Firstly, the female main character is a dark-skinned black woman, something you rarely see in Hollywood. There have been several instances of light-skinned actresses playing characters written as dark-skinned, directly impacting the plot.

It’s beautiful to see a dark-skinned woman being the centre of such delicious affection and deep love. Keisha was a well-rounded character, not a stereotype, one that dark-skinned black women are typically reduced to.   The main characters’ love story was beautiful, touching, and complex. It reminded me of how love felt as a teenager—raw, overwhelming, all-encompassing, and often childish.

The show did complicated characters really well — Keisha, Justin, and my favourite: Dawn, Justin’s mother. Dawn was the quintessential mother hen, wanting the best for, and always ready to protect her child. She insisted on what she thought was best for him, even when he disagreed—or didn’t like it. I enjoyed her mannerisms, and seriousness and how she admitted to the fact that therapy helped her a lot in her role as a mother. Her deep and fierce love for her family was apparent in her character. It was refreshing to see the Edwards’ family dynamic as a successful black family with a healthy, loving relationship.

Forever” was a breath of fresh air, with complicated but lovable characters brought to life by impeccable acting from the actors. And can we also get into the impeccable use of music in this show? It reminded me of some of my old faves, of course, I had to find the playlist.  I 100% recommend this show. I haven’t started anything new since I finished it because that kind of excellence is hard to beat, so I’m taking my time to find something else worth my time.

Although, I considered watching the third season of “Blood of Zeus”, but I’ll need to watch several recaps because I’ve forgotten all the characters and why I was drawn to them in the first place. I’m with Oyin about waiting for years to see the next season of a show, though I do it all the time for characters I would die for.

I still can’t get over “Sinners” — Inemesit

I recently saw “Sinners”, Ryan Coogler’s latest project, and it’s the best thing I have seen in a long time. I knew it would be good because it’s Ryan, but it easily exceeded my expectations.

First, we have not one but two doses of Michael B Jordan (that alone is enough reason to see this movie while it’s still in cinemas), then he delivers the best performance of his lifetime yet. He deserves an award for the subtle differences between the twins – Smoke and Stack alone. Then we have the love story between Michael’s character and Wunmi Mosaku, who plays Annie, which is beautiful, sexy and everything we need to see more of on the big screen.

In true Ryan fashion (writing layered, unforgettable characters), he created full fleshed, nuanced female characters who aren’t sidekicks or just love interests in “Sinners”. They all hold their own and bring something extra and special to the incredible story from Wunmi, Hailee Steinfield to Jayme Lawson and Li Jun Li.

Delroy Lindo let it all out on the screen with his acting and singing, showing us again why he is one of the best African American actors. Jack O’Connell was phenomenal, and Miles Caton was so mesmerising, I couldn’t believe this was his movie debut.

I could go on endlessly about this cinematic masterpiece, from its rich world-building and soulful music to its layered characters and visually stunning, emotionally resonant storytelling. Instead, I encourage you to go and see “Sinners” for yourself.

Now, it’s your turn to get hooked. Let our recommendations provide the perfect escape or social spark, and bring you endless hours of entertainment.
