Children of Blood and Bone is coming to life on the big screen, and guess who joins the cast? None other than Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr.
The highly anticipated movie adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s New York Times bestselling novel “Children of Blood and Bone” assembles a talented all-star cast to debut Hollywood’s next major fantasy blockbuster franchise. Gina Prince-Bythewood, renowned for her exceptional work on “The Woman King” (2022), takes the helm as director.
The plot
Loosely inspired by Adeyemi’s roots in Yoruba tradition, “Children of Blood and Bone” is set in the mythical kingdom of Orïsa, where a ruthless king has outlawed magic. The protagonist, Zélie, embarks on a perilous quest to restore magic to her people. With its richly imagined world, complex characters, and gripping storyline, this movie is shaping into an unforgettable cinematic experience.
The all-star cast

In January 2025, the principal casts were announced. South African actress Thuso Mbedu, who will play the lead role of Zélie is at the forefront. Tosin Cole will portray Zélie’s older brother Tzain, while Chiwetel Ejiofor takes on the role of King Saran. Academy Award winner Regina King will bring Queen Nehanda to life, and Damson Idris will play Prince Inan.
The general public expressed concern about Amandla, a light-skinned biracial actress, playing Amari, a dark-skinned character who is particularly criticised by her mother and constantly encouraged to lighten her skin tone. This concern highlights the possible loss of a very instrumental arc to the character and the whole story.
Also confirmed are Academy Award winner Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, and Lashana Lynch as Jumoke.
Following an open casting call, the movie production has also unveiled the remaining cast members for the film. The movie will now see Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr making her Hollywood debut. Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo will join the cast, along with Pamilerin Ayodeji, Shamz Garuba, Zachary Momoh, and Temi Fagbenle.
When will “Children of Blood and Bone” be released?
Filming is set to begin in South Africa, with its release date scheduled for 15 January 2027. As fans of the book anticipate the movie’s release, there is also interest in seeing how well Hollywood interprets the novel, which is rooted in the author’s Nigerian Yoruba culture.
