Ayra Starr is setting the pace and breaking records at the MOBO Awards!
At the 2025 Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards in Newcastle, England, the Celestial Being made history as the first African woman to win the “Best African Music Act” in 16 years.
And she didn’t stop there — Ayra also clinched the “Best International Music Act” award, becoming the first African woman to take home that honour. She triumphed over powerhouse artists like Asake, Tems, and South Africa’s Tyla, as well as global icons such as Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, and Latto.
There’s no doubt that 2025 is off to an incredible start for Ayra, following an exceptional 2024. She made history as the first and youngest Nigerian female artist nominated for “Best African Music Performance” at the 66th Grammy Awards and secured three wins at the 2024 BET Awards. She also took home two awards at the African Entertainment Awards, US, for Best Female Artist Central/West Africa and Best Female Artist.

MOBO: Celebrating Black Excellence
Since its inception in 1996 by Kanya King, the MOBO Awards has been a cornerstone of celebrating Black music, spanning genres like hip-hop, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, gospel, and African music. Over the years, the awards have been instrumental in recognising and elevating Black artists, shaping the global music landscape.
Speaking of rising stars, Nigerian-British rapper Darkoo also had a big night, winning “Best Female Act” and “Song of the Year” for Favourite Girl featuring Dess Dior.
A huge congratulations to Ayra Starr and Darkoo! Their wins are not just personal milestones but also a testament to the unstoppable rise of African music on the global stage. We can’t wait to see what’s next for them!
