The Super Falcons delivered a stunning comeback to secure their record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

The Nigerian Super Falcons have once again etched their name in the history books, pulling off a dramatic comeback to defeat Morocco 3–2 in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). With this victory, the Falcons secured their 10th continental crown, reaffirming their dominance as queens of African football.

A slow start and second-half resurgence for Nigeria

The final began with Morocco in full control, as the host nation capitalised on home support and struck early. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak kicked off the scoring in the 12th minute, followed by a second from Sanaâ Mssoudy before the 25th-minute  mark. The early double points put Nigeria under immense pressure, leaving fans fearing the worst.

The tide turned after halftime. Nigeria came out revitalised, and a VAR-awarded penalty in the 50th minute gave Esther Okoronkwo the chance to pull one back. She made good use of the opportunity, slotting the ball past the Moroccan goalkeeper.

In the 71st minute, Folashade Ijamilusi levelled the score after a precise cross from Okoronkwo. Then, as the game neared its climax, substitute Jennifer Echegini scored the winning goal in the 88th minute, completing one of the most remarkable comebacks in WAFCON history.

With this triumph, Nigeria extended their record as the most successful team in WAFCON history, claiming a 10th title. Okoronkwo’s creativity and composure were pivotal, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade’s leadership inspired the team when it mattered most. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie also earned praise for her crucial saves and was later named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Ajibade walked away with the Best Player award.

This was more than just a football match; it was a story of courage, resilience, and belief. From two goals down in a hostile environment to lifting the trophy, the Super Falcons demonstrated why they remain the benchmark in African women’s football.
