After vacation, this post-trip skin reset helps me keep up the travel mood a little longer

Returning from a trip can often feel like the vacation glow is fading, but a post-trip skin reset is the perfect way to hold onto that refreshed feeling.

You know how your energy dips the second you touch down at the airport or walk through your front door after a delightful trip? It happens to the best of us, but a thoughtful skin reset completely shifts my mood. It’s my way of saying, “welcome home” to my skin. That’s how I keep the vibe alive. It helps me hold onto that glow and stay in the vacation mood just a little longer.

Of course, I take skin care on vacation seriously, but after spending days under the sun or exploring dusty city streets, the skin needs some recovery time. You also get to extend the magic of your trip by pampering your skin one step at a time.

After my last holiday, I returned feeling anxious, because I knew my schedule was about to get hectic again. My post-trip skin reset is a grounding ritual that refreshes both my body and mind. It’s gentle and helps me land softly from cloud nine while giving my skin a warm, nourishing re-entry into reality.

Skin reset step one: Cleanse the journey off your skin

The first step in my post-trip skin reset is a long, comforting warm bath or shower that helps me release tension and ease back into reality. I treat it like a grounding ritual, one that tells my body that vacation may be over, but care and comfort are always present.

The first thing I use is a powder-based brightening enzyme cleanser that I apply as a mask. It contains natural exfoliants like rice and fruit enzymes to help dissolve the buildup of sunscreen, sweat and pollution from my face while gently reviving dull skin.

While that sits, I exfoliate my body using a gentle scrub that combines AHAs with collagen or fruit-based exfoliants like papaya. This step helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and smoothen the skin.

Next is a hydrating bar soap that does the job without stripping moisture. It leaves my skin soft and soothed, which is exactly what I want after travelling. I’m not trying to scrub off my glow, just the journey.

Once I rinse off the mask, I follow up with a gentle but deep face cleanser that calms and clarifies my pores. It gives my skin a clean slate.

Your post-trip skin reset starts with  washing off the journey but holding onto the glow.

What I use:
Anua Rice Enzyme Brightening Cleansing Powder
Advanced Clinicals Anti-Aging Collagen Body Scrub
Joy Beauty Bar – Exfoliation (avocado and papaya)
Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam

Step two: Deep hydration is non-negotiable

Travelling can dehydrate your skin, especially after long trips, recycled air, sun exposure, and imbalanced sleep cycles. That’s why the second step of my post-trip skin reset is all about intentionally moisturising my skin.

I continue my routine with a hydrating toner rich in calming ingredients. This instantly soothes the skin and preps it to absorb all the goodness that follows. Then a light vitamin C serum packed with antioxidants to brighten skin and reverse any dullness or sun spots. I follow this with a niacinamide-based serum that helps improve skin tone and barrier function. To seal in all the hydration, I massage in a rich, nourishing moisturiser that leaves my skin dewy. It includes ingredients with barrier-supporting actives.

For my body, I don’t hold back. I use a deep moisturising lotion that’s hydrating and barrier-restoring. I apply and massage slowly to allow my skin to absorb the product.  Post-trip skin reset is self-love, not a race.

What I use:
Anua Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner
Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum
Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum
Cosrx Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+
Nivea Cocoa Butter Body Lotion

Step three: Extra love to overworked areas

There’s always that one spot that suffers the most during a trip. For me, it’s my back — because I don’t hold back on vacation. Between long-haul transportation, endless sightseeing, and lounging on beaches in odd positions, the strain always adds up.

Before I travel, I might pre-book a massage appointment at my favourite spa for the day after I return. Nothing says “welcome home” like a deep-tissue session that kneads the tension out of every muscle. If I can’t make it to the spa, I have a solid backup — my husband gives me one of his signature massages at home (he’s so good at it!).

He uses a blend of shea butter and a special oil mix made by my mum. I don’t know what’s in it, but there’s definitely a hint of menthol, just enough to cool and soothe. The scent alone calms me down, and applying it turns the whole thing into a full sensory reset.

Caring for your skin post-trip also means releasing physical tension. Your back, shoulders, and neck will thank you for the attention.

What I use:
Raw shea butter
Essential oil mix

Step four: Your scalp needs post-trip skin reset too

It’s easy to focus only on your face and body when thinking about a post-trip skin reset, but your hair deserves love too. Your scalp is part of your skin. With my natural 4C hair, I may not always follow a humidity-proof routine while on vacation (I’m there to relax, not obsess). Sun, sweat, product build-up and different water types all take a toll on my sensitive and dry scalp

I start with a gentle cleanse that won’t strip my hair but will remove all the gunk that’s built up during the trip. A soothing scalp massage while washing helps ease tension and gets the blood flowing again. I follow this with a nourishing oil treatment, especially around my edges and crown, where the sun hits hardest.

This step has become non-negotiable in my post-trip skin reset ritual. Healthy scalp, happy hair, better mood — pretty sure it all connects.

What I use:
L’Oréal scalp advanced anti-dandruff shampoo
L’Oréal scalp advanced anti-discomfort shampoo
ROA sea buckthorn oil essence

Step five: Scents keep me in vacation mode

After all that effort, I feel refreshed and ready to relax. But there’s one more step because building your body scent is important. I like to layer my scent properly to ensure my perfume lasts longer on me. This process can be either long or short, but for my post-trip skin reset, I go for the short version – a three-step process that never fails.

I apply a body balm/butter in the same scent family as my recently-used travel perfume, then add a few spritzes of body mist and perfume. It’s like bottling the memory. Even though I’m no longer on the beach, my skin smells like I could be.

This step may be small, but it keeps the vacation mood alive in the subtlest way.

What I use:
Scented body butter
Body mist
Perfume with similar notes

Now, go easy on me — I did warn you that I’m a lover girl. The final part of my post-trip skin reset isn’t about skincare, it’s about mental care. Once I’ve pampered my body and skin, I round off the evening with a comforting ritual: a movie night with my husband.

If we travel together, this helps us stretch the joy of the trip just a little longer. We settle into that familiar comfort with a good film, snacks and a bottle of wine. It’s how we stay in that easy and connected mood before our re-entry into the world.

If I travel solo, it’s a beautiful way to reconnect with him. We catch up, share stories, laugh about the trip, and just bask in each other’s presence.

At the end of the day, a post-trip skin reset is also about emotional recovery. It’s a return to home, to self, and to everything that makes the routine feel comforting again.
