My playlist of songs that make the holidays memorable

The holiday season in Nigeria is a time for celebration, reflection, and merriment. While holiday movies add to the festive cheer, music is also a huge part of entertainment for the holidays. Music is deeply engrained in the fibre of Nigerians, and the holiday is another time to showcase that rich culture and express the joy of the season.

Here are songs that make the holidays memorable

The hymns

Who can forget the soft melody of “Silent Night” with its gentle harmonies? Or the sound of people belting “Joy to the World,” and “We Three Kings,” after memorising every word of its lyrics days before Christmas?

In Nigeria, Christmas hymns are more than just festive tunes; they symbolise oneness. Singing along to “Jingle Bells,” and “Come, All Ye Faithful,” our Christmas hymns reflect the unique blend of traditional and modern influences that define our festive spirit.

The “12 Days of Christmas”

I never could tell when to start counting the “12 days of Christmas”— the 1st or the 12th of December— but one thing I know for sure is the gift that comes with every single day, and I bet you do too.

“12 Days of Christmas” had kids eagerly waiting in line to sing about their gifts, and I definitely had fun being number five and yelling “5 golden rings” every time.

 “Odun Nlo Sopin”

Odun Nlo Sopin,” a timeless classic released 45 years ago by Mrs D.A Fasoyin and the Good Women Choir, continues to captivate the hearts of Nigerians with its enduring relevance and charm. Much like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” to Americans, this timeless piece holds a special place in the hearts of Nigerians, evoking feelings of nostalgia, comfort, and joy that never fade.

Loosely translated, the song means “Dear God, the year is ending, protect my family and keep us safe.” This iconic song has become an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, transcending generations and remaining an irreplaceable staple of the country’s musical scene.

“This Year

Even after 12 years since its release, Jaywon’s “This Year” remains evergreen, as it rejuvenates at the beginning of every year with promises of a prosperous year.

What better way to start the year than with a positive attitude and the declaration, “We’re making money!”

These holiday songs have a unique ability to evoke emotions, create memories, and bring people together. Whether you’re a fan of classic anthems, funky favourites, or modern hits, there’s a Nigerian holiday song to brighten your season.

I’ve also taken the liberty to make a playlist with some of our favourite holiday songs.

Take a listen here.

Enjoy!
