AMVCA Diaries: Kehinde Bankole emerges as Best Lead Actress of the Year!

One element of a memorable film is not just the performance of the lead actors but also that of its lead actresses. With their embodiment of strong, complex characters, they bring diverse perspectives and experiences to the big screen, challenging stereotypes and empowering audiences.

At this year’s Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), Kehinde Bankole won the “Best Lead Actress” award. Her unforgettable portrayal of Asari in the acclaimed film Adire captured the hearts of both audiences and critics, vividly bringing the character’s rich and intricate personality to life.

Her Journey

Before she clutched the lead role of “Adire,” Kehinde’s first entertainment experience was as a model. In 2003, she made it to the Top 10 for the Miss Commonwealth Nigeria pageant. She also became the new face of Lux in 2007.

Her acting debut was as “Caro” in Super Story. She also starred in other Wale Adenuga productions, such as This Life and Papa Ajasco.

From 2011 to 2014, Kehinde acted in several films, such as “October 1,” “The Meeting,” and “Two Brides and a Baby.” However, her most notable acting experience on television came in 2015 with her role as Kiki Obi in “Desperate Housewives Africa,” which was produced by Mo Abudu.

Since then, it has been nothing but a steady rise to the top, with captivating performances in Dear Affy (2019), Blood Sisters (2022), and, of course, her award-winning performance in Adire (2024). She’s also a leading figure as the legendary Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti in the movie of the same name, which is set to come out later this year.

In conclusion, Kehinde Bankole’s well-deserved win as Best Lead Actress at the AMVCA is a testament to her talent, dedication, and impact on the African film industry. From her humble beginnings as a model to her rise as a leading lady on the big screen, Kehinde has consistently brought depth and nuance to her characters, inspiring audiences and challenging stereotypes.

As we celebrate her achievement, we also acknowledge the significance of lead actresses in shaping the film industry and beyond. With her upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated biopic on Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this talented actress. Congratulations again to Kehinde Bankole on her AMVCA win – a true icon in the making!”
