Dear Reader,

Welcome to our inaugural Travel Special – a heartfelt exploration of the journeys, both exhilarating and challenging, that African women and women of African descent undertake across continents. This isn’t just a collection of destinations; it’s a testament to the unyielding spirit of women who dare to cross borders, embracing the world with courage and an open heart.

Within these pages, we delve into the unique tapestry of experiences woven by our passports – the joys of discovery, the thrill of new cultures, and the profound personal growth that travel ignites. But we also shine a light on the often-unseen hurdles: the biases encountered, the administrative labyrinths, and the constant navigation of perceptions shaped by our identities. We consciously highlight the resilience required to overcome these obstacles, celebrating every woman who charts her own course, unafraid to challenge the status quo and reclaim her freedom to explore.

For us, travel is more than simply moving from one place to another; it’s a living narrative of our history, our adaptability, and our inherent connection to a global sisterhood. In my own Ijaw heritage, we understand the essence of migration and the strength found in new beginnings. This understanding reminds us that our journeys, both literal and metaphorical, are imbued with an ancestral wisdom that guides our every step.

From the vibrant streetscapes of Lagos to the serene landscapes of Marrakech, and from the bustling markets of Accra to the historical richness of Salvador, this special champions both the everyday adventures and the extraordinary expeditions. We share intimate stories of overcoming adversity, practical advice for navigating diverse environments, compelling narratives of cultural exchange, and the profound philosophies that fuel our wanderlust.

This Travel Special is an invitation to a shared journey – to acknowledge the external pressures that can attempt to limit our movement, to honour the deep wellspring of courage that resides within us, and to redefine what it truly means to be a global woman, not as a fleeting trend, but as a powerful and enduring act of self-discovery and boundless freedom.

Thank you for embarking on this profound and liberating journey with us.
