The opening ceremony faced severe criticism from the Catholic Church in France, the Middle East Council of Churches, the Vatican, and homophobes in general. They strongly condemned the portrayal of drag queens during a performance set similar to Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, “The Last Supper.” The painting is a famous depiction of Jesus Christ, so various Christian groups viewed the show as disrespectful.

Iman’s gender question

This saw a series of online bullying and transgender accusations against Iman. The allegations were quickly debunked by the International Olympic Committee, emphasising that Iman was born a woman; the disinformation was soon traced back to Russian sources.
