British fashion designer Sarah Burton has been announced as the new creative director of Givenchy, the renowned LVMH-owned fashion house, effective immediately. She will take charge of both women’s and men’s collections, bringing her distinctive vision to the brand. “I am so excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility, and beliefs,” Burton said in a statement on Monday, September 9, 2024.
This appointment follows Burton’s departure from Alexander McQueen in September 2023, where she had worked for 26 years, including 13 years as creative director. Her final collection for McQueen, shown at Paris Fashion Week, was a heartfelt farewell that drew an emotional response from the fashion world, including a long-standing ovation. Burton took over as creative director at Alexander McQueen after the brand’s founder, Lee Alexander McQueen, passed away in 2010 and is credited with increasing the brand’s sales to approximately €830 million by 2022.
Sidney Toledano, chairman of the Givenchy board, praised Burton’s appointment, calling her “an exceptional creative talent whose work I have passionately followed for many years.” He added, “Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic maison, known for its audacity and haute couture.”
Burton’s new role marks a significant milestone as she takes up a position once held by McQueen from 1996 to 2001. she becomes one of the few women leading a major Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) brand. Her debut collection for Givenchy will be presented for the Autumn/Winter 2025 season at Paris Fashion Week in March.
