4 totally underrated Netflix series

Beyond the blockbusters and undisputed revelations, there are these little nuggets that have remained under the radar. And we want to change that. Here are our underrated Netflix series to watch urgently.

Don’t get me wrong: yes, we loved La Casa de Papel, Queer Eye and even You. But everyone talks about them, and everyone has seen them, and that has a way of ruining the surprise and getting on our nerves. So, we turn to the little Netflix nuggets that are still — too — confidential!

Firefly Lane

The Pitch

The series follows the joys and disappointments of two best friends between whom it is “life and death” forever. Tully hosts a successful talk show, and Kate is going through divorce proceedings and looking for a job. Despite the ups and downs of their respective journeys, the two friends continue to be there for each other.

Why you need to give it a chance

For two seasons, we follow the lives of these two opposite BFFs. The introverted Kate and the extroverted Tully have been through a lot together since they met in the 70s. We love that the series moves from one era to another while making these jumps in time fluid, thanks to the very kitsch period looks. This series is a treat that we love to savour to relax at the end of the day, and then, what a pleasure to find Katherine Heigl (“Grey’s Anatomy ”) and Sarah Chalke (“Scrubs”). Without forgetting that its entertaining side does not prevent it from tackling more serious themes such as sexual violence, miscarriages or even drug addiction.

Anne with an E

The Pitch

Anne is a young girl who lives in an orphanage, and her life is far from perfect. But everything changes when she is mistakenly sent to an elderly woman and her brother. They are disappointed to see her because they had hoped to adopt a young boy instead. Anne is determined to prove her worth! The series is based on the bestselling book “Anne of Green Gables.”

Why you should give it a chance

Anne is a spirited and imaginative teenager who never gives up. Throughout the three seasons released between 2017 and 2019, the audience follows the journey of this unique girl in search of happiness. The protagonist is highly intelligent and displays significant resilience that commands respect. We love her feisty attitude and admire her strength in the face of life’s challenges. This series gently explores the difficult period of adolescence and delves into the question of identity search during the third season. Throughout the show, the themes of friendship and family are central to the narrative and explored with great sincerity.

Sweet Tooth

The Pitch

On a planet ravaged by humans, things go from bad to worse. Suddenly, babies born as hybrids, part-human, part-animal, come into the world. Unfortunately, at the same time, a pandemic emerges, and the traumatized population blames the hybrid children. A few years later, Gus, a young boy who is part deer, part-human, previously protected by his father, must suddenly fight alone to stay alive and find refuge, as children like him are hunted.

Why you should give it a chance

The post-apocalyptic series starts slowly but becomes incredibly engaging. The remaining humans are completely paranoid, leading to absurd scenes of farewell songs in front of burning houses. While there are quite a few gruesome deaths in this show, there are also heartwarming moments to balance it out. Particularly, the hybrid children are incredibly cute, and the friendship between Gus and Big Man is very touching. This unique series, based on the comic of the same name, has a lot of charm. It captivates while raising awareness about ecological issues and the potential consequences of our lifestyles.

The Empress

The Pitch

Sissi the Empress, from a young girl to a legend. The series romanticises the life of this extraordinary woman from her encounter with the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph, also known as Franz. The young empress must conform to the conventions of the monarchy for better or for worse, all for love.

Why you should give it a chance

The beauty of the images, sets, and costumes is reason enough to watch the series. Add to that the superb acting of the empress and flawless pacing. The series delves into the themes of freedom and the role of women in a society where they had no place outside the role of a mother. The rebellious Sissi in the show is a feminist icon craving freedom and independence. Despite some historical inaccuracies, the series still manages to debunk the myth of Empress Sissi by questioning the differences in social classes and the gap between rulers and the ruled.
