The ultimate ally for healthy hair, hair masks have it all. But if applied at the wrong time, they could lose their effectiveness. Here’s how to reap the full benefits.
Hydrate with ease!
We know it: maintaining your hair requires an impeccable hair care routine. This involves adopting a suitable shampoo, a conditioner that detangles and softens. And, from time to time, a hair mask to bring it back to life.
But be careful, the order of application for hair care products is crucial. If you thought you were doing well by applying your mask after conditioner, you’re actually (partially) wasting its effects. This is a very common mistake highlighted by hairdresser Thomas Tuccinardi.
The right order that changes everything
We’ve all learned to follow shampoo, then conditioner, then mask last – or worse, to replace conditioner with the mask. Mistake: for the active ingredients to truly penetrate the hair fiber, the mask must be applied after shampoo and before conditioner.
Why? Because shampoo opens the hair cuticles. This is when moisturizing, repairing, or nourishing ingredients can infiltrate and act deeply. If you apply your conditioner before the mask, you close the cuticles too early and prevent the mask from delivering its full potential. Applied as the last step, “this will allow to seal the cuticles, close them, and give much more shine,” assures the specialist.

The right method? After washing your hair, apply your mask directly. Leave it on for 3 to 20 minutes depending on the condition of your hair, then rinse. Only then, apply your conditioner.
Whether you’re looking to rehydrate dry lengths, repair heat damage, treat brittle ends, or revive dull hair, this reversed routine maximizes the effectiveness of your treatment.
The right frequency
Even if the temptation is strong, it’s strongly advised not to overuse the mask. For most hair types, once a week is usually sufficient. If your hair is fine, space out applications to every two weeks to avoid the “flat and heavy hair” effect.
Conversely, if your lengths are very dry, damaged by heat or coloring, a weekly mask becomes an essential step.
As for hair that’s truly in distress (rough strands, brittle, dull ends…), you can supplement with a leave-in conditioner. It’s applied after the complete routine to prolong hydration and protect hair throughout the day. It’s also an excellent ally for limiting breakage during styling.
