How Moët & Chandon lit up Lagos and our hearts in its first-ever tree-lighting ceremony

The festive season is here, and if there’s one thing we all love, it’s a little sparkle, a little joy, and those magical moments we carry with us forever. On the 16th of December, Moët & Chandon brought all of that to Lagos with their first-ever Tree Lighting Ceremony. And let me tell you—it wasn’t just about lighting a tree; it was about lighting up hearts, and creating memories.

And this isn’t a regular fir or pine tree, or even one made from plastic.  This tree was built entirely out of Moët & Chandon bottles—each one carrying its own story of celebrations and cheers from all over Lagos. It stood tall, shimmering and elegant, like a piece of art reminding us how life’s best moments are often shared over a glass of something bubbly.

Osato Evbumowan, the Marketing Director of Moët Hennessy Nigeria, summed it up beautifully when she referred to it as a “symbol of creativity, sustainability, and celebration.” But for those of us there, watching the lights come on, it felt like something more—it was a reminder of how special it is to come together during the holidays.

This season is all about coming together, sharing stories, passing on traditions and creating new ones. Just like our cover feature with Deola Sagoe and her daughter Teni Baks, the Moët’s tree, their story is one of legacy and reinvention—celebrating the past while building something fresh for the future.

At the ceremony, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The gifting corner, for example, was a little slice of magic where guests could find carefully curated surprises—perfect for anyone looking to add sparkle to someone’s day. And, in a playful twist, Moët invited us to share videos of ourselves hanging their champagne baubles on our holiday trees. We’re totally doing that.

But the real magic happened during the countdown. Imagine a sea of voices counting down—ten, nine, eight…—followed by fireworks bursting into the night as the Moët tree lit up. It was breathtaking. For a moment, it didn’t matter where we came from or what we did. Eyes wide, hearts full, we were all celebrating something timeless: joy.

That’s what Moët & Chandon does so well. They remind us that life is made up of moments—big and small—that deserve to be toasted to, remembered, and shared. This season, as we decorate our homes, gather with family, and maybe sip something sparkling, let’s remember to create those little moments of magic.
