Accor Group’s new Sofitel Cotonou Marina Hotel and Spa is a slice of French luxury located right in the heart of sleepy little Cotonou, Benin Republic. The 5-star hotel’s proximity to major landmarks like the Esplanade des Amazones and the Route des Pêches makes it a prime spot for visitors like me looking to do touristy activities around the city. The hotel celebrated its inauguration on 12 December 2024, and I was honoured with an invite.
Greeted by smiling doormen with hails of “Bonjour madame!” as I got out of the car on the 11, and walked into the lobby, I knew my stay was going to be pleasant, fabulous and enjoyable. Check-in was easy and fast, and as I sat down in the lobby to wait for my gracious hosts, I was immediately served a refreshing hibiscus iced tea by another smiling staff. Everyone at Sofitel is always smiling, you just know they’re happy to be there.
As I waited, I used the opportunity to browse the lobby. Divided by partitions with open shelves that held gorgeous knick-knacks and decorated with stunning art from local artists, the lobby is a study of understated elegance, staying true to Sofitel’s brand of drawing inspiration from the local culture.
In the centre, underneath a chandelier that resembled twinkling stars or sparkling droplets of water, was Muse, the lobby’s bar-coffee lounge, characterised by a massive circular bar, with a pyramid made up of macarons, towering over the ever-present, diligent waiters. Directly opposite the bar, to the right side of the lobby, past the lifts, is Vivo restaurant, one of several in the hotel.
Vivo is a fusion restaurant whose cuisine combines Beninois and international flavours are revisited with boldness and creativity. Speaking of restaurants. L’Ami is another restaurant at the hotel, run by Georgiana Viou, a Beninoise and the first black woman to receive a Michelin star. I had a chance to speak with this chef; stay tuned for exclusives on her work life and delicious dishes later! Beyond Vivo are large French windows leading to the patio, with the Sofitel Spa to the left, nestled quietly in a serene patch of greenery, the Olympic-sized pool in the centre, and Corniche, another restaurant to the left. Sofitel Cotonou Marina is breathtaking, with well-planned architectural and landscape design. The hotel features 198 rooms, 14 of which are suites and 5 duplex suites with private pools.
The decor and quiet luxury of my 6th-floor room was gorgeous, and so was the sea view from the private balcony. The elegant use of shades of gold, teal, white and black created a tasteful ambience. I didn’t get a chance to spend much time in the room; it was mostly sleep and shower; thanks to the several exciting activities our hosts planned for us. Every time I came back after a long day exploring the sights of Cotonou, (more on this later!) there was always a small token in my room; from pastry to some calming tea, for better sleep. I know it was housekeeping, but it felt like I had a benevolent fairy godmother who loved to leave me little gifts.
Sofitel Cotonou Marina Grounds
The grounds of the hotel, about 312,153 square feet; also host La Pavilion, the building housing the state-of-the-art cinema with Dolby Atmos sound, and the Dome, the elegant business centre where conferences are held. I had the opportunity to experience “Gladiator 2” in the cinema, which was delightful.
My Spa Experience
On my penultimate night at the hotel, three days after my arrival, I visited the spa for a facial. Sofitel Spa was a delightful sensory experience. I was greeted by an extremely pleasant receptionist who laughed gracefully at the irony of me saying I don’t speak French in French. In perfect English, she confirmed my appointment and asked me to sit as I waited for my appointment.
In true Sofitel fashion, the spa lobby was designed tastefully, with elements like visual and auditory art blending effortlessly to create an elevated, serene environment. After getting treated to an oshibori (hot towel) and a refreshing watermelon juice, I was shown into the spacious changing rooms, after which I was led into the massage room and onto my treatment.
I got an Express facial, featuring the application of the “Masque des Légendes,” which was deeply hydrating and felt so relaxing that I fell asleep for a few minutes, as the aesthetician worked her magic. She used organic products from the Parisian skincare brand KOS Paris, who collaborated with Sofitel for their spa experience. The products smelled so good, reminding me of freshly baked croissants and French coffee at breakfast.
After my session, I was shown into the space with the indoor pool, with a cup of relaxing hibiscus tea and massive windows overlooking a garden. This was overall, my absolute favourite part of the entire spa experience.
From the delicious food to the charming and professional staff, to the delightful environment of Sofitel Hotel & Spa, it’s clear that there’s no other hotel and spa doing luxury hospitality quite like them.
Stay tuned for more on my adventure at Sofitel!
