Federal government unveils itinerary for 2024 Independence Day celebrations

On Thursday September 19, 2024, the federal government inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the 2024 Independence Day Celebration.

The committee which was inaugurated by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Usman will be responsible for planning, organising, and executing all approved activities to commemorate the country’s independence.

While inaugurating the committee, Hadiza Bala Usman said that a series of “low-key” events to be held to mark the 64th Independence Anniversary celebration to reflect the trying times the nation is undergoing.

The press conference

The 64th Independence Anniversary celebration commenced with the World Press Conference on Thursday, September 26, 2024. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the Minister, who spoke at the press conference praised the efforts of the incumbent government in transforming Nigeria.

He also added that the 64th independence anniversary is a time of reflection, celebration, and renewed hope, and stressed that so far Nigeria has demonstrated resilience, strength, capacity, and an unyielding spirit in the face of numerous and daunting challenges.

Religious prayers

Juma’at Service on Friday, September 27,  2024, and on Sunday, September 29, 2024, special prayers will also take place across mosques and churches to pray for the protection of the country as leaders.

Presidential broadcast

On Monday, September 30, 2024, a Presidential broadcast will air with the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressing Nigerians.

Independence rallies

Finally on Tuesday, being Independence Day, rallies will be held to commemorate the 64th Independence Day.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have revealed that mass rallies will be held on major campuses across the country to celebrate Nigeria. The NANS President Comrade Lucky Emonefe said, “We will hold a major convergence at the Unity Fountain in Abuja and at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, Lagos, where students from major institutions around those two locations will hold an all-day program to commemorate our Independence Day.”

He also added that the rallies were meant to express pride in Nigeria, and gratitude to God for our survival despite all challenges, “It is also a statement that we Nigerian students will not join forces with negative people who have evil intentions against this country. We cannot be deceived into putting our house on fire under whatever guise.”
