Beats, style and vibes: My night at the PUMA x Davido launch

It’s 7 pm, Friday, or how else does that GloRilla song go? At Palms Mall in Oniru VI, I witnessed the unveiling of PUMA x Davido’s second collection. I showed up full of energy and anticipation, but if you know about Lagos events, then you know that time is just a suggestion. This meant waiting until well after 8 p.m. for Davido to make his grand appearance.

But hey, what’s a little waiting when there are good vibes and even better drinks? My favorite cocktail, Martell Coconut Sunrise kept me hydrated; I had at least four of them—it was just that good. The crowd was mingling, the music was bumping, and the excitement grew as we all waited for the main man himself.

A sneak peek of the collection

Before Davido’s appearance, we had the chance to see the collection up close. It did not disappoint. The PUMA x Davido 2.0 collection was a perfect fusion of Afro-streetwear and global fashion. From bold sneakers to the comfy yet stylish hoodies and track jackets, this was no ordinary collection due to the singer’s personal touch that made it clear that it wasn’t about looking good but also making a statement.

One standout piece was the T-shirt with the inscription, “For Those I Love, I Will Sacrifice.” It added a personal and emotional touch to the collection, reflecting Davido’s dedication to his loved ones and fans. This shirt, along with the other designs, solidified the idea that this collection wasn’t just about fashion—it was about making a statement. The shirt’s message was powerful and resonated with everyone in the room, setting the tone for the rest of the collection.

Creative control shines through

What made this collection even more special was learning that the afro-beats superstar had more creative control this time around. The first thing he created was his custom sneakers. Seeing him and his team proudly wear the collection was a testament to how much this collaboration means to him. It wasn’t just about slapping his name on the label—it was about showcasing his style and vision.

Davido and his personal style

I asked Davido to describe his style in just three words. He said, “Fresh, unique, and standard.” And honestly, that’s exactly what this collection is. Fresh, with its eye-catching designs; unique, with its nod to Nigerian culture; and standard, setting the bar high for streetwear collabs.

This collection is a true reflection of Davido’s journey—blending his African roots with global streetwear trends in a way that only he could. From the bold fashion statements to the unforgettable Martell cocktails (shoutout to the Coconut Sunrise!), the PUMA x Davido event was one for the books. Fresh, unique, and standard—Davido’s got it covered.
