Funke Akindele’s blockbuster movie, “Everybody Loves Jenifa” , has achieved an unprecedented milestone in Nollywood history, becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time.
The film’s distribution company, FilmOne, announced the accomplishment on their social media handles, revealing that its box office revenue surpassed ₦1 billion in two weeks.
“Everybody Loves Jenifa” has officially hit a historic ₦1.466 billion and counting, at the box office, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time! A massive thank you to our incredible audiences in Nigeria and Ghana for making this dream a reality! ” the post read.
Released on December 13, 2024, “Everybody Loves Jenifa” features a talented stellar cast, including Nancy Isime, Stan Nze, Bisola Aiyeola, Patience Ozokwor, Chimezie Imo, Jackie Appiah, Folarin Falana, Isaac Olayiwola (known as Layi Wasabi), and more.
The filmmaker’s incredible PR
Aside from its cast, the movie’s success can be attributed to Akindele’s innovative approach to movie promotions, which previously earned her the title “Queen of Nollywood movie PR.”
PR stunts for the movie included a tug of war with casts of her recent movies, an official music video and several meet-and-greets with cast members.
Additionally, her exciting PR stunts generated buzz and excitement around the movie and saw fans troop to the cinemas to see it with their favourite celebrities.
Past box office records
In 2020, Akindele’s “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” was the highest-grossing of the year, with ₦636,129,120 garnered at the cinemas.
In 2021, her film “Battle on Buka Street” generated ₦668,423,056 at the cinemas.
By 2023, the filmmaker took things a notch higher; “A Tribe Called Judah” became her first movie to cross the ₦1 billion mark in Nollywood history, making ₦1,404,187,806 in the cinemas.
