Editor’s Note: As of January 4, 2024, “A Tribe Called Judah” had grossed over N1 billion in revenue, according to its distribution company, FilmOne Entertainment.
Less than two weeks into its release, the Nollywood blockbuster “A Tribe Called Judah” became the highest-grossing movie in 2023, amassing over 854 million naira in Nigerian box office revenue.
The comedy-drama earned this spot in barely 12 days since its release in cinemas on December 15, 2023. With a 9.6 rating on IMDb and Nollywire, the film is one of Funke Akindele’s highest-grossing movies. In 2022, “Battle on Buka Street” amassed a sum of 600 million naira at the Nigerian Box Office, and “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” raked in a similar sum of 600 million naira in 2020.
In just a short period, Funke Akindele’s “A Tribe Called Judah” has hit a milestone that not many movies have had the opportunity to in the past years. While her other projects throughout 2023 are outstanding in their various ways, “A Tribe Called Judah” seems to resonate heavily with the Nigerian audience.
From its stunning cast, which includes Nollywood veteran Fathia Balogun, Funke Akindele herself, and Etinosa Idemudia, to the captivating storyline, it is no wonder that the film is breaking new ground in Nigerian cinema, even before it hits a month.
Congratulations to Funke Akindele and her co-director, Adeoluwa Owu, on this exciting achievement. We look forward to the amazing things 2024 has in store for the team.
