The end of an era, but not the end of Donatella VERSACE.
If there’s one thing we know about Donatella Versace, it’s that she never does quiet. From daring necklines to gold-drenched opulence, subtlety has never been her style. So when news broke that she was stepping down as Versace’s creative director after nearly 30 years, the fashion world — myself included — was stunned.
Before you clutch your pearls or Medusa-head jewellery, rest assured — Donatella isn’t going anywhere. She’s simply turning the page to a new chapter.
A new era for Versace
On 13 March 2025, Donatella announced her transition to Chief Brand Ambassador, shifting her focus to the house’s philanthropic and strategic initiatives. Stepping into her shoes is Dario Vitale, formerly of Miu Miu — the first designer outside the Versace family to lead the brand’s creative direction.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” Donatella shared in an Instagram statement, adding that she’s eager to see Versace through fresh eyes. But let’s be honest—no one does Versace quite like Donatella.
What this means for Versace
Donatella took the helm of Versace in 1997 after the tragic murder of her brother Gianni, shaping the brand into the powerhouse it is today. She gave us Jennifer Lopez’s iconic jungle dress, turned chainmail into a red carpet essential, and cemented Versace’s reputation for unapologetic, high-glamour confidence. Her reign? Nothing short of legendary.
Now, the brand is gearing up for a new era under Dario Vitale, former head of ready-to-wear at Miu Miu. If his past work is anything to go by, Versace could be embracing a more youthful, contemporary edge. But the real question is — will it still exude that signature opulence?
What’s next for Versace?
Vitale officially steps into his role this April, with his debut Versace collection set to hit the runway in September for Spring/Summer 2026 at Milan Fashion Week. Until then, the fashion world will be watching closely to see how he interprets a brand so deeply tied to Donatella’s vision.
One thing is certain — Donatella isn’t fading into the background. She may no longer be the creative force behind Versace’s runway collections, but her impact on the brand and fashion at large is undeniable. And let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be surprising if her influence still lingers behind the scenes.
A new era has begun, but the Donatella effect? That’s forever.
