In recent news, Nigerian lawyer Opeyemi Mabawonku, employed at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), is alleged to have violently assaulted his wife, Abiola, former lead Human Resources at Paystack, in front of their two young daughters after video evidence surfaced online on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
Surveillance footage which has since gone viral on the X (formerly Twitter) shows Opeyemi verbally assaulting his wife before proceeding to physically assault his wife, Abiola despite having their daughters in the room.
In the clip, the Nigerian lawyer Opeyemi Mabawonku was seen using derogatory words on his wife, referring to her as a “mad and foolish woman.” He is also seen chasing his wife ceaselessly, making attempts to grab her fruitlessly as she dodges him.
Abiola then attempts to de-escalate the situation by reminding her husband their daughters were present while trying to call her father, but Opeyemi responds, saying, “You are a bastard if you don’t call your father.”
Moments later Opeyemi is seen telling their daughters to leave the sitting room and go back to their rooms and then proceeds to violently throw heavy objects at his wife repeatedly but Abiola dodges each throw in an attempt to save herself.

Nigerians are reacting
The footage of Opeyemi assaulting his wife had sparked reactions from Nigerians with some calling for an immediate termination of Opeyemi’s employment at PWC and his arrest by security agencies.
This tragic incident raises critical questions about domestic violence in Nigeria, the societal impact of such actions, and the lasting psychological damage it can cause, especially for children who witness these events firsthand. As of the time of this report, there has been no report of an official arrest made and PWC has not made a statement as well but Opeyemi has reportedly deleted his LinkedIn profile.
