The 2025 Met Gala celebrates the power of black men style

Last year’s “Sleeping Beauties” might’ve been the crown jewel of the Met Gala, but this year, we’re cranking it up to legendary status. The 2025 theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” is set to bring history, fashion, and Black dandyism together in a way that’s going to make everyone stop, stare, and have you rethinking your entire wardrobe.

When is the 2025 Met Gala?

Mark your calendars for Monday, May 5, 2025. The biggest night in fashion will, as always, take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The first Monday of May never disappoints, and with this theme, it promises to be one for the ages.

Who’s running the show?

This year’s co-chairs are a powerhouse blend of fashion, talent, and undeniable cool: Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and the legendary Anna Wintour. But that’s not all—LeBron James is making his debut as honorary co-chair, bringing his iconic presence to fashion’s biggest night. With their influence spanning film, sports, and music, this group is poised to elevate the Met Gala to extraordinary new heights.

“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” is all about celebrating the Black dandy and his impact on fashion across the Atlantic diaspora. From 18th-century Europe to today’s street style. Black men have used clothing as both armour and a statement, embracing elegance and sophistication while challenging social norms.

Additionally, I expect to see a stunning array of styles inspired by the iconic ruffled blouses of Prince, the legendary pop music star celebrated for his flamboyant style. I’ll also be on the lookout for looks inspired by Harlem’s finest fashion designer and tailor  Dapper Dan. For a touch of modern-day flair, I hope to see inspiration from Virgil Abloh, the visionary designer and founder of Off-White. And Tyler, The Creator, the creative force behind his fashion label le FLEUR as muses and I will not be accepting anything less.

Coming May 2025, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” will examine the historical and cultural emergence of the Black dandy.
Inspired by curator Monica Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” the exhibition will present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world.   Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour will co-chair the next #CostumeInstitute Benefit on the First Monday in May. LeBron James will serve as honorary chair.
The Benefit, also known as The Met Gala, celebrates the opening of the 2025 exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and provides The Costume Institute with its primary source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations, and capital improvements.
“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” opens to the public on May 10 and will be celebrated at the 2025 Met Gala on May 5. #SuperfineStyle #MetGala2025 #Fashion

Black dandyism traces its origins back to the 18th century, when Black men in Europe, often forced into servitude. They used clothing to navigate a world that sought to diminish their identities. Through sharp tailoring, lavish garments and unwavering commitment to style. These men shattered stereotypes and redefined what elegance and respectability looked like. Over the years, Black dandyism has transformed into a powerful symbol of resistance, empowerment and sophistication. Today, style icons like Jidenna, Pharrell Williams, and A$AP Rocky continue to embody and celebrate this rich fashion legacy.

The expectations are high and I have some ideas for every guest at the gala next year!

Here are five on-theme Met Gala outfits we can’t wait to see:

Classic dapper suiting with a twist

We want to see guests embracing the elegance of Black dandyism with sharply tailored suits. Crafted from rich fabrics like velvet or brocade. Inspired by Harlem’s legendary Dapper Dan, we hope to see bold prints, monograms, and eye-catching accessories such as oversized gold chains or silk scarves. This modern interpretation of classic sophistication, infused with a touch of Harlem Renaissance flair, is exactly what we’re looking for on the Met Gala red carpet!

Prince-inspired new romantics

For those who love a bit of drama, we are hoping to see Prince-type-styling. Pairing a ruffled blouse with a tailored suit in a standout shade like deep purple, scarlet or even pastel. High-heeled boots, lace gloves, and chunky jewellery will tie together this 1980s style so elegantly. This look is all about mixing opulence with androgyny and I need everyone to come swinging.

Streetwear meets dandyism

For a modern twist, we’re hoping to see streetwear fused with dandy aesthetics. Imagine a sharp overcoat layered over a graphic tee, paired with tailored  trousers, and sleek sneakers—very Tyler, the Creator vibes. We’re eager to see how guests finish the look with accessories like a fur hat or leather gloves to keep it polished but rebellious. This fusion of urban cool with refined dandy elegance is sure to make a memorable statement at the Met Gala.

Tailored shorts with statement outerwear

We hope to see bold moves on the red carpet, like ditching traditional long pants for tailored shorts that exude confidence. Paired with a dramatic outerwear piece—whether it’s a sleek trench or a tailored blazer. This look blends playful charm with high-fashion elegance. Add rich fabrics and bold colours to make sure this modern twist on dandyism stands out under the Met Gala lights!

Accessories that elevate looks to new heights, capturing the essence of Black dandyism. We hope to see standout pieces like wide-brimmed hats, bold brooches, and striking footwear that infuse flair into every outfit. Guests should embrace cultural symbols and personal touches that reflect their identity, transforming each accessory into a conversation starter.

What do I expect to see on the Met Gala red carpet this year? I’m ready for the men to bring their A-game and break free from the classic black tuxedo mold. With style icons like Zendaya and Beyoncé rumoured to be in attendance, I’m buzzing with anticipation to see how everyone interprets this daring theme. I expect a dazzling array of fearless fashion choices that push the boundaries of traditional style, particularly in gender-fluid fashion for women.
