Embracing minimalism in your skincare routine with skin fasting

Social media and its army of skincare influencers have long led us to believe that the key to flawless skin lies in piling on countless products. Take, for example, the Korean skincare ritual of layering, where one stacks multiple skincare goodies for a supposed radiant complexion.

But recently, there’s a new sheriff in town, and it goes by the name of skin fasting. This fresh approach to skincare is turning heads by advocating for a less-is-more philosophy.

So, what’s skin fasting all about?

Contrary to its name, skin fasting doesn’t mean abandoning skincare altogether. Instead, it’s about hitting the pause button on serums, toners, and exfoliants and sticking to a pared-down routine with only the essentials.

Dr Harshna Bijlani, speaking to the Indian edition of Vogue, describes skin fasting as a timeout for the skin from the onslaught of products it faces daily. The idea is to let it reset and find its balance again. Proponents of this trend believe that simplifying your routine can help your skin function better and ultimately improve its overall health.

But don’t toss out your entire skincare arsenal just yet! According to dermatologist Debra Jaliman, even during a skin fast, it’s crucial to keep a few basics on hand. Think of a gentle cleanser and a trusty moisturiser.

Cleansing is important, as it helps rid your skin of bacteria, oil, and other nasties that can accumulate throughout the day. And don’t forget to moisturise! Hydration is key to maintaining skin health, regardless of your skin type.

And what about sunscreen? It’s a non-negotiable. UV exposure not only increases your risk of skin cancer but also accelerates the ageing process. So, slather on that SPF!

But what are the benefits?

While there’s limited scientific evidence, Dr Bijlani suggests that skin fasting can help strengthen the skin barrier, reduce sensitivity, and give your skin a much-needed detox from all the products and actives it has been bombarded with.

However, it’s essential to recognise that skin fasting may not be suitable for everyone. People with specific skin concerns, such as acne or rosacea, should proceed with caution and consult a dermatologist before making any drastic changes to their skincare routine.

In the end, whether you’re a skincare maximalist or minimalist, finding the right balance for your skin is key. So, why not give skin fasting a try, and see if less really is more for you?
