Have you found the love of your life? And how did you know?
In the Disney movies we grew up watching, the love interest appears, saves the girl, she falls in love, and then they live happily ever after. This conditioned many of us to believe that it’ll be easy to know when you’ve found the one for you and to love forever. Can it really be that easy? I’ve always wanted to understand how you know when you have found the one for you. Or if people believed that there was someone specific that you’re destined to be with.
In this second edition of #GistMe, we are chatting with Vanessa, a young woman who tells us how she knew that the love of her life was meant to be. She stresses the importance of trusting yourself completely and learning to know what you want and what you don’t want. It all boils down to being in tune with your body, spirit, and really focusing on your feelings.

The dreams

I believe myself to be a spiritual person; I’ve always trusted myself on a deeper level, I never say this too often, but when I’m predicting things, I’m always correct. I started having dreams for a year of myself in a relationship, but I couldn’t see or remember exactly what he looked like. At that time, I was so happy in these dreams that I could always remember what being in a relationship with him felt like; It felt so real.
One evening at dinner, a friend paused mid-conversation and asked what had me smiling so much. Then, I told her everything about my dream boyfriend. You guys, why did my friend bring me back to reality? The first thing she said was, “Is this a spiritual attack? Did someone do juju for you?” I’m laughing about this now, but when she said it, I got worried. I had been enjoying the dreams which made me believe that I was about to meet my special someone.
After that day, I decided to start working out before bed and put my phone down at least 45 minutes before sleeping. I didn’t want to have too many dreams about a stranger whom I didn’t know, especially since I started to see it as a negative thing. It stayed on my mind for a few more weeks; I probably had one last dream about it, and then it faded. That’s Lagos for you: last week is in the past, and today is all that matters.
Our first meeting

The strange thing about our first meeting was that it happened at the same restaurant where my friend and I had dinner — the very place where she had asked me those questions. I was meeting up with another friend, and she was running very late because of traffic. Luckily, I still had my work bag, so I had a drink and brought out my laptop. I’m working really hard, so I’m focused on my computer, but then there’s like a loud greeting of friends coming from the table behind me.
For some reason, I look up, and at the exact time I find a pair of eyes on me, I smile easily at him, and he smiles easily at me. It’s like we knew each other. I got immediate butterflies in my stomach and wanted to stand up to hug him hello. It took every ounce of self-control to stay put in my chair and continue working. Which was fake typing on my computer, and opening tabs and closing tabs, I definitely needed.
30 minutes later, I look up again, and he’s there, and he says, “I just had to come over and say hello, it feels like we know each other. But I know I’ve never seen you in my life.” I laughed as I shook his hand, and right after, I knew that he was the guy in the dream; it was the same feelings as before. I’ve never felt that way in my life, just in my dreams, and then standing in front of him. I’ll never forget what he said that day because it was exactly how I felt.
Secrets still kept
I’ve never told him about the dreams, because I didn’t want him to think of me as some witchy person. Till today, he still doesn’t know! And I can’t tell him, I like that he thinks we’re together because he approached me and not because I dreamt of his aura for months. The way I feel in those dreams is how I feel right now. I’m so happy. I wondered what would have happened if he shook my hand and I had buried those feelings from the dream. I probably would have felt that it was just another guy hitting on a girl at a bar. I’m always so happy I listened to myself. That night we had such a perfect day, and now we have two kids!

The one for you

Luckily for Vanessa, the man she manifested from her dreams turned out to be the perfect one for her. She may have spent months manifesting a man, then forgetting about it because she’s a romantic. But now, she’s the happiest she’s been in her life. Do you believe in your dreams as deeply as Vanessa? How did you know that your partner was the one for you? How deeply can you trust yourself in your dreams to allow real-life experiences to be as beautiful? Vanessa’s story reminded me to remain open and to allow new experiences and new layers of life to unravel. She’s a lesson in the power of “Yes” and learning to trust the voice of your inner spirit.
