Why Cotonou should be on your travel list in 2025

Seeing more of Africa is on my bucket list for 2025 and to that effect, I took the liberty to look up destinations to explore. While many may flock to more popular destinations in East and South Africa, one destination I couldn’t help but put on my list is Cotonou— a city waiting to be discovered.

Located in the Republic of Benin, Cotonou is a city that seamlessly blends traditional culture with modern charm, making it an absolute must-visit destination in 2025.

Rich cultural heritage

Being of Cotonou descent, I have always marvelled at my parent’s unwavering need for my siblings and I to learn the culture and bits of the local languages which all came in handy when I first visited in 2016 for official purposes.

While I didn’t get the chance to explore the city, its rich cultural heritage was evident in the people’s pride in wearing African prints over western clothing, speaking their local languages and an appreciation for foreigners who can speak a phrase or two of their language.

Locals are also more likely to trap you into a history lesson if they know you’re exploring the city so be prepared for a few sessions.

Wondering where to go in Cotonou for sightseeing? Here’s a list for you. There is the Amazon statue of the Dahomey women (yes, the warrior referenced in the movie “The Woman King”), also visit the longest graffiti wall in West Africa made by over 40 artists and your trip is incomplete without visiting the Dantokpa market which is the largest open-air market in west Africa.

The amazing food

Cotonou’s food scene is a fusion of traditional Beninese cuisine, French colonial influences, and modern twists. I remember trying simple yam and potato fries with a green sauce during my visit and thinking it was the best ever.

You can explore local delicacies such as watché or Atassi (rice and beans with a special sauce), calulu (a hearty stew made with fish or meat), and malava (a sweet, fermented corn drink). While you may not recognise everything you see, be open to trying out dishes and you just might be hooked!

Cotonou’s bubbling nightlife scene

@theupperdimpledgirl This was easily my best night in Benin Republic. To think we had such a stressful day prior to this time but still went out and made the beat out of the night! Again, i live for the memories. Every one of it. This is a night I’ll forever cherish.😊🧡🫶🏾 Trip was curated by @vibetrippers on Instagram #theupperdimpledgirl #beninrepublic #cotonou #nightlife #vibetrippers #tug30dayscontentchallenge #travelgram #tourism ♬ original sound – Tomisin Oyerinde

Cotonou is the de facto capital city, and the economic hub of Benin so expect a bustling city that probably never sleeps. The city’s nightlife scene is also thriving, with a range of bars, clubs, and live music venues to choose from if you’re looking to have fun at night.

French luxury right in its centre

Speaking of nightlife, one cannot leave Sofitel Cotonou Marina Hotel and Spa out of the conversation. Accor’s new slice of French luxury just opened in the city, in December 2024. The hotel and spa has an array of contemporary restaurants with delightful cuisines ranging from French to Asian Fusion, one of which is under the experiences hands of chef Georgiana Viou, the first black woman to get a Michelin star. If you’re looking for luxury enjoyment, Sofitel Cotonou Marina is the perfect spot for you.

Getting there and moving around

Cotonou is easily accessible by air, with direct flights from major African cities. The city is also well-connected by road and rail, making it easy to explore the surrounding region. Once in Cotonou, you can get around by taxi, motorcycle, or on foot, taking in the sights and sounds of the city.

Whether you’re a culture vulture, a foodie, or an adventure-seeker, Cotonou has something for everyone. So why not start planning your trip to discover the magic of Cotonou for yourself?
