It was a wonderful year for movies in 2024, and we are ready for an epic year in 2025! With a lineup that includes action thrillers, family-friendly adventures, and the return of our favourite franchises, there’s something for everyone.
Here are some of the most anticipated movies of 2025
“One of Them Days”
Whoever thought about casting SZA and Keke Palmer together holds a special place in my heart. Directed by Lawrence Lamont, this comedy film stars Palmer (Dreux) and SZA (Alyssa) as roommates in a race against time to avoid being evicted from their apartment after Alyssa’s boyfriend runs off with their rent money.
While Palmer is no stranger to movie screens, this will be Sza’s movie debut, and we’re excited to see Sza explore this new venture. “One of Them Days” will hit cinemas in America on 17 January 2025 and 24 January in Nigeria.
“Summer Rain”
If you haven’t seen the promotions for this movie yet, your algorithm needs tweaking. The movie, directed by Adenike Adebayo-Esho and written by Owumi Ugbeye, follows two friends on a decade-long journey to discover they are each other’s soulmates. It highlights how certain experiences shaped their lives and how parents’ choices affect their children.
“Summer Rain” features Kalu-Anaga Emmanuel, Kayode Jnr Ojuolape, Tina Mba, Genoveva Umeh, Michael O Ejoor, Bolaji Ogunmola, Lateef Adedimeji, Daniel Etim-Effiong, and more. Nothing feels better than a love story with an amazing cast for the season of love. The movie will be released in cinemas across Nigeria on 7 February 2025, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
“Reel Love”
Another Valentine special coming to our screen this year is “Reel Love,” a co-production between Nollywood’s loverboy, Timini Egbuson, and FilmOne Studios, with renowned director Kayode Kasum steering the wheels of the project.
This romance film explores themes of love, culture, and the beauty of embracing life’s unexpected twists with a love triangle. The movie will be released on Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2025, making it a perfect addition to your plans for the day.
“Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning”
We all grew up watching Tom Cruise pull the most phenomenal stunts for the “Mission Impossible” franchise, and “The Final Reckoning” has us ecstatic about what stunt Cruise would pull next. Your mission, should you “choose to accept it”, is to watch Ethan Hunt and the rest of the IMF attempt to save the world by destroying the Entity once and for all. The movie’s release date is scheduled for 23 May 2025 and hopefully doesn’t get postponed for the fifth time.
“Ballerina”
Another movie we can not wait to see is “Ballerina” and if you loved “John Wick”, you will definitely love this one. The movie is a spin-off of the “John Wick” franchise, starring a talented ballerina-turned-assassin, Eve, who is on a path of vengeance against the villainous Chancellor who killed her father.
It has also been confirmed that “Ballerina” will see the return of a few familiar faces from the John Wick franchise, including Winston and Wick himself. Ballerina was initially scheduled to release an entire year earlier on 7 June 2024, but the film was delayed to shoot additional action scenes and will now be released on 6 June 2025.
“Now You See Me 3”
If you haven’t seen the franchise’s first two instalments, you should! The “Now You See Me” movie franchise is a series of heist thriller films that follow a group of illusionists known as “The Four Horsemen,” played by Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, and Dave Franco.
Throughout the franchise, the “Now You See Me” films explore themes of magic, illusion, deception, and the power of misdirection. The film touches on social justice, as the Horsemen use their skills to expose corruption and bring the perpetrators to book. The third instalment will be released on 14 November 2025, and we’re excited about it.
With this line-up, it is clear the year is shaping up to be an unforgettable one at the cinema. So mark your calendars and get ready to enjoy the movie year because it is going to be an interesting ride!
