In a monumental sweep, HBO’s epic historical drama “Shogun” dominated the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, securing an unprecedented 18 awards.
Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, “Shogun” tells the captivating story of John Blackthorne (Timothy Dalton), an English pilot-major who becomes stranded in 17th-century Japan. As he navigates the complex and treacherous world of feudal Japan, Blackthorne forms an unlikely bond with Lord Toranaga (Toshirô Mifune), a powerful daimyo vying for control of the Japanese empire.
Directed by Eric Brevig and produced by Andrew Sodroski, the critically acclaimed series captivated audiences with its stunning cinematography, intricate costumes, and gripping narrative, landing the most nominations of any show, 25. “Shogun” took home 18 total Emmys for its first season—the most for a single season in Emmys history. The wins included the Best Drama series award, which solidified its status as the first non-English-winner of the Best Drama category, and Best Lead Actress in a Drama, which Anna Sawai won, becoming the first Asian winner in the category history.
