Tobi, Inemesit, Denise, Esther & Ebun

Behind Marie Claire Nigeria is a team of dedicated and passionate women who shape the narrative and bring stories to life. But what fuels their confidence and drive?

Confidence and drive are the spark that ignites our passions, fuels our pursuits, and helps us shine. But what fuels that spark within us? At Marie Claire Nigeria (MCN), we are proud to have a talented team of editors who embody the values of excellence, creativity, and perseverance.

We turned to these passionate and dedicated women to find out what fuels their confidence and drive. Here, they offer a glimpse into the passions, values, and experiences that motivate them to produce outstanding work and inspire others to do the same.

Denise believes we must be seen and heard

Denise, Ag. Managing Editor

Driven by a deep sense of self and belief that everything unfolds for her highest good, our Ag. Managing Editor says, “I know the universe is built to love and support me, and I am ready to face anything and take up space.”

Too often, women are defined by our relationships — daughter, friend, partner — but Denise believes that to thrive, women must find their identity “Your foundation must be yours alone. Who are you, and why are you here? Answer that, and you will not just exist — you will thrive.”

More than anything, Denise is deeply intentional about her life. “I care for myself deeply, and in return, my life has reflected that love back to me… This level of purposefulness radiates across every facet of my existence, leaving me feeling capable and self-assured.”

Prioritising values and understanding flaws

As women, we learn –quite early too– how to be our biggest critics, but our Content Editor, Tobi, believes there’s great strength in seeing and understanding who you are clearly, including flaws. “Despite our  flaws, I want us women to be kinder to ourselves because we are human and that alone makes us worthy.”

In addition, Tobi chooses to prioritise her values, support system, and intuition, which have all been instrumental to building a career as a writer, editor and business owner without formal training yet. “Now, I’m only seeking to get better at it and harness my creativity more effectively.”

Learning to own your voice

Speaking on the source of her inner strength, Inemesit, our Lifestyle and Culture Editor, says “My parents’ affirmations laid the foundation for my unshakeable strength and confidence.” While she has grown to become self-aware and fearless, Inemesit shares details of a time when she doubted her ability to own her own voice.

“I second guessed myself in editorial meetings, during interviews with powerful women, or even sharing my opinions in spaces but I learned to lean into my voice with confidence, knowing that the way I see the world—my lens, my experiences, my intuition—has value.”

Although doubt and fear may creep in sometimes, Inemesit says “I remind myself of who I truly am. Now, I don’t just ask if my voice belongs in the room; I walk in knowing it does.”

Optimism can be powerful

Esther, Copy Editor MCN

Compelled by deep optimism, our Copy Editor, Esther, thrives on staying positive in every situation, “I never think of the worst, but always look for the positive side of every situation. I surround myself with people who support, encourage and believe in me.”

Furthermore, she shares how launching her podcast in 2021 despite tough challenges has impacted her confidence and drive. “The experience taught me that I can achieve difficult goals with hard work and perseverance.”

In addition, she encourages more women to be compassionate, as everyone needs a bit of kindness.

Drawing strength from God

Our Fashion and Beauty Editor, Ebunoluwa, highlights the source of her drive and strength as the Holy Book, specifically in 2 Corinthians 12:9, it says, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness”. According to her, these words emphasise that it is okay to be weak and draw strength from God in your weakness.

“As for confidence, it is a myriad of previous experiences and optimism. Now, I think back at the experience and reassure myself, that if I could get through those times, I can get through another day. My unique experiences fuel my authenticity and that is the reason my voice matters a lot.”

A recognition and appreciation for the women in our lives

To the women who inspire support and uplift our editors, we see you. We celebrate you and we thank you. For Denise, they are her mother, grandmother, sister, and friends, particularly Purity and Kilali.

For Tobi, they’re her late mother, her mother’s immediate sister, sister, friends, and her soulmate, Feranmi.

For Inemesit, it’s her mother, aunties and friends — Samantha and Anita; For Ebun it’s Kotimi, and for Esther, her mother, a constant reminder that women can get everything they want.
