Sunscreen protection: How much does your face really need?

The “two-finger rule” is simple and effective.

We know that sunscreen protection is essential, however, many of us don’t know how much sunscreen our face really needs to be fully protected. Whether we wear makeup or not, the correct amount and regular application of sunscreen are among the most important steps in our skincare routine.

According to dermatologists, the simplest way to measure the appropriate amount is the “two-finger rule”: we apply the sunscreen along the length of our index and middle fingers. This amount, which corresponds to about half a teaspoon, ideally covers the entire surface of our face.

We always choose broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Although SPF 30 offers basic protection, SPF 50 is what ensures more complete coverage, especially if we spend many hours outdoors. But be careful: even the strongest SPF doesn’t mean we can stay in the sun all day without reapplication. We need to reapply it every two hours — and definitely after sweating, swimming, or if we frequently touch our face.

The right dosage for sunscreen protection.

For those of us who wear makeup, there are excellent options in powder or spray form with SPF, which we can easily apply during the day without ruining our makeup. We can even prefer foundations or BB creams with a sun protection factor for an extra boost.

We don’t forget to choose the appropriate composition for our skin type: oily or combination skin needs light, oil-free textures with a matte finish, while drier skin benefits from moisturising filters with ingredients like panthenol or allantoin.

Daily sunscreen application is not just another beauty step — it is the most essential investment we can make for the youthfulness, radiance, and health of our skin.
