Get ready for a serious case of nostalgia! We’re bringing back the best of our childhood.
I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m a sucker for nostalgia. There’s just something magical about old times — the vibes, the simplicity, the tiny joys of our childhood we didn’t even realise we’d miss.
The other day, I saw a tweet that had me in my feelings, and it got me spiralling (in the best way) down memory lane. It got me thinking about things we’ve lost in our rush to embrace the new and improved.
So many things deserve a comeback, from old-school tech to forgotten trends. In honour of the good old days, here are 13 things we need to bring back – ASAP!
Huge photo albums

Remember the iconic family photo albums with their sturdy spiral bindings? Those treasured albums were more than just a collection of pictures – they were a symbol of family pride, carefully curated and placed on centre tables for the world to see.
Whenever visitors came over, these albums would make an appearance, proudly displayed as a testament to the family’s history. I vote to bring back the joy of physical photo albums.
Handwritten notes are a lost art
In an age of digital communication, there’s something special about receiving a handwritten note. The feel of the paper, the imperfect handwriting, the smell of ink. It’s a sensory experience that just can’t be replicated with a text message or email.
Come to find out people now have profitable businesses providing services built on curating handwritten notes. I think it’s brilliant!
Kids’ birthday parties – but for adults
I would give anything to have my parents plan my birthday party, pick out a flowy, flowery dress outfit with shoes — matching socks too— and order a cake with my name and age in butter icing to celebrate the special day. Don’t forget the bouncing castles and all that good stuff.
Then, all we had to do was show up to find people ready to sing “Happy Birthday,” and we would have a good time. I want that again!
Flip phones were the original cool kids

I’ve always believed the flip phone was the “IT girl” phone. I still stand by it. Maybe not for everyday use, but flip phones deserve a comeback as a retro fashion statement. Imagine the aura and aesthetics of hanging up on an annoying partner—or boss—on a vintage flip phone. Bliss!
The charm of Lagos’ vintage architecture
Growing up in Lagos, I have fond memories of visiting friends and family in sprawling homes with high ceilings, terrazzo floors and wide windows that seemed to welcome everyone with open arms.
The grand spaces whispered “You’re welcome here” in a way that’s hard to find in today’s cramped, compact houses. Those homes felt like a true reflection of our warmth and hospitality. I also miss the sense of community and connection that came with them.
TV and CD player combos were the ultimate entertainment setup

I was recently looking through my family’s extensive CD collection, and a realisation hit me. We may never watch these movies again because there aren’t DVD/CD players any more.
Remember the thrill of watching your favourite movie on a bulky TV and CD combo? Getting scolded for scratching the CDs? Now, we’re stuck with sleek but soulless streaming services. Bring back the nostalgia!
Having meals together is a dying tradition
I’m not talking about going out to brunch or having dinner on special occasions. There’s something special about sharing a meal with family, and it’s an experience that’s slowly being eroded by our increasingly busy lives and distance caused by japa.
Brick game was the ultimate time-killer

Who else remembers spending hours playing Brick Game and forgetting to do chores? Owning a Brick Game meant you were a cool kid and wanted to show off how well you could play.
And, of course, who could forget the epic battles with siblings over whose turn it was next? “Just one more level” was the constant plea. This classic game needs a comeback, and my thumbs are ready.
Old R&B was the soundtrack to our souls
While I appreciate every era of music, there’s something about 1900s-2000s R&B music that I just can’t get over. I frequently revisit the music of Toni Braxton, Rihanna, Boyz II Men, Lionel Richie, Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, and many others.
Just writing their names gives me a thrill, and I believe the soundtrack of our childhood deserves a comeback.
Flames for love

I recall a time when love was simple: just cross out letters from your name and your crush’s to see if you were compatible or not. F — Friends, L — Lovers, A— Admirers, M— Married, E— Enemy.
If they weren’t L, A or M, you knew to move on to someone else. Simple! Now, love is complicated.
Denim dungarees will always be a fashion staple
The comfort, the nostalgia, and the undeniable style of dungarees are why they deserve a spot in our modern wardrobes. They were perfect for play time, outdoor activities, and hiding items in their many pockets— my favourite. Who wouldn’t want to rock a pair?
Nutri-C was the ultimate childhood drink

Nutri-C was the undisputed champion of childhood drinks. It wasn’t sodas, energy drinks, or fancy cocktails – Nutri-C was the ultimate refresher. Its iconic citrus flavour and nostalgic charm have left an indelible mark on our childhood.
Consider me the first signatory if someone starts a petition to bring back Nutri-C in PET bottles.
Free time is a luxury we can’t afford to lose
Having a purposeful career is good, but we often underestimate the peace that comes with free time. In an age of constant busyness, we’re unable to make time for relaxation and leisure. Remember when you could spend hours doing absolutely nothing?
There you have it – 13 things from our childhood we need to bring back to make our lives more fun, meaningful, and nostalgic. Who’s with me?
