As a fashion editor, this is how I pack my capsule wardrobe for a trip based on itinerary

Don’t let your suitcase weigh you down. With the right capsule wardrobe, you can travel light and still be stylish. No matter what your itinerary is, here’s how to pack for that trip like a pro.

Packing for a trip doesn’t have to be stressful or chaotic. The key to travelling light without losing your style is a functional capsule wardrobe. I’ve found that prepping my outfits beforehand makes all the difference; it makes it easy to fit everything I need into my suitcase. This isn’t just about space-saving; it’s about intentionality. With a few flexible looks and a couple of backups, I always feel covered for anything on the trip without dragging half my wardrobe along.

Whether you’re jetting off on a romantic getaway, travelling  solo, or heading on a work trip, the capsule wardrobe is your best travel companion. A solid capsule wardrobe consists  of versatile pieces that work together across different settings. Think day-to-night pieces, neutral staples, and accessories that can instantly elevate a look.. With the right pieces in your capsule wardrobe, you’ll always feel put-together, even in transit.

Originally coined in the 1940s and popularised by London stylist Susie Faux in the 1970s, a capsule wardrobe gives you suitable outfits for any occasion without stress. We’ve previously explored this concept in our holiday capsule guide, and now, we’re taking it further with a tailored breakdown for different travel styles.

Your travel wardrobes should reflect who you are and should remain practical, stylish, and comfortable. The magic is in curating, not cramming. Because less clothes doesn’t have to mean less stylish, here’s how to build a capsule wardrobe that matches your destination and your lifestyle.

Capsule wardrobe for the city explorer

The city lover in you lives for curiosity. Think long walks, café hopping, museums, and gallery openings. For your trip, you’ll want outfits that are comfortable enough to explore in but stylish enough to blend in. This isn’t the trip for high heels and overpacking. Choose easy layers, sleek accessories, and versatile pieces that move as effortlessly as you do.

What to pack:

Comfortable sneakers and loafers

Wide-leg trousers and high-waisted jeans

Three basic tops in neutral colours.

Oversized blazer and denim jacket

Statement sunglasses and a top-handle crossbody bag

Three dresses – mini, midi and maxi

Style tip: Choose a palette of two to three complementary colours for your tops and dresses, so you can style them together in different ways. Think navy, white, and mustard or black, ivory and blush pink.

Capsule wardrobe for the beach lover

The first thing I do on any trip is locate the beach, change into my bikini, and head straight there. It’s hands down my favourite place on vacation. Give me saltwater, sunshine, and good company, and I’m happy. For the woman who lives in flowing pieces and sunscreen, the beach is more than a destination; it’s a state of mind. Your wardrobe should be just as breezy. Think flowy fabrics and pieces that take you from sunbathing to sunset cocktails without skipping a beat.

What to pack:

Three swimsuits – in bold and neutral colours

Two flowy dresses

Cotton co-ord set

Linen co-ord set

Two basic tops

Slides and sandals

Straw hat and large tote

Style tip: Choose breathable fabrics and pieces that can take you from beach to bar. Belted kimonos that double as dinner dresses are also important.

Going for a work trip doesn’t mean your style has to take a hit. I like to keep it polished yet flexible; sharp enough for meetings, but with a little room for personality. I also plan for after-hours moments, just in case I need to sneak in a hangout with a friend or catch an event in the city. The goal is to pack pieces that transition smoothly from boardroom to town. These include pieces with smart tailoring, elevated basics, and accessories that add just the right amount of glam.

What to pack:

Two smart dresses in wrinkle-proof fabric

Tailored trousers and a versatile blouse

Lightweight blazer

Loafers or heeled pumps

A silk scarf to switch up your look

Minimal jewellery

Style tip: Use accessories to rotate looks without overpacking. A structured bag works as a carry-on and a work bag.

Capsule wardrobe for the wellness woman

The wellness trip is all about ease; you’re chasing calm, not creases. You’re all about sunrise journaling, spa days and leisure moments. Comfort is non-negotiable, but that doesn’t mean losing your style. Think soft lounge sets, breathable fabrics, and lightweight pieces that feel good on your skin and still photograph beautifully. Whether it’s a solo reset or a girls’ wellness retreat, your wardrobe should flow as freely as your itinerary.

What to pack:

Three lounge sets – soft and stretchy

Two co-ord sets – linen and cotton

Oversized shirt

One versatile kimono

Lightweight sneakers

Breathable jumpsuit

Big silk scarf – for hair and body wrap

Flip-flops and sandals

Large tote bag

Style tip: Stick to earthy tones or monochrome to keep it zen and versatile. Think forest green, beige, and charcoal.

The Afro-diaspora traveller

The vibe for this trip is comfort meets culture. You’re visiting the continent and connecting with roots. This kind of trip is equal parts meaningful and stylish, so your wardrobe should reflect that. Think Afrocentric pieces that you can switch up or down, breathable fabrics for heat and movement, and cultural yet practical accessories.

What to pack:

Ankara co-ord set (with pants or shorts)

Print dresses (mini & maxi)

Flat sandals and kitten-heeled mules

Cotton tops and tanks

High-waisted cotton shorts and denim pants

Lightweight silk scarf

Big tote bag and crossbody bag

Style tip: Choose Afrocentric pieces that pair well with neutral basics; they add instant personality to your wardrobe.

How to pack like a pro

Now that you have all you need, there’s the matter of packing your suitcase in the right way. Packing light is its own form of art, and a capsule wardrobe makes packing easier  while staying stylish.

Here’s how to pack your capsule wardrobe like a pro:

Roll, don’t fold. It saves space and reduces wrinkles.

Keep a mini steamer, it’s your best friend on the road.

Don’t forget your laundry bag. Separating clean from worn clothes is a travel sanity hack.

Pack a pouch with your wardrobe MVPs: double-sided tape, safety pins, mini perfume, and a lint roller.

Use packing cubes; they keep things neat and accessible

Limit shoes to a few pairs. Wear your sneakers to travel and pack less chunky shoes. Two to three pairs should do, including slippers and heels.

A capsule wardrobe is about being intentional, not minimal. You don’t have to sacrifice style. Less clutter means more comfort, less stress, and more freedom to be stylish. So next time you plan your trip, pack light and look fabulous doing it!
